When it comes to glare or light reflecting off a surface, the angle of the glare that you see is exactly equal to the angle of the light. You’ll notice the surroundings of your room reflecting back in the mirror.Īs you walk around the mirror, the angle of the objects reflecting at you will change, stretching and shrinking depending on how close or far your movements are from the mirror.Īccording to The Law of Reflection, the angle of reflection in the mirror is precisely equal to the angle of incidence. In other words, the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.įor example, stand near a mirror positioned flat on the ground. The Law of Reflection explains that light that hits a reflective surface at an angle (like the front of a person’s eyeglasses) will be reflected back at the same angle. So much so, that glare can be described through what’s known as “The Law of Reflection.” One of the reasons why camera glare is easy to address is because light acts in predictable ways. Glare can even be a useful storytelling tool in abstract or street photography.īut as mentioned above-when it comes to glare-too much of a good thing causes trouble. It can highlight textures and definition in still life photos like food photography. Glare is necessary to capture the true nature of shiny objects like cars and jewelry. Some glare can be helpful in photography. The magnitude of the glare can change depending on the angle and intensity of the light. To have glare, you need two things: a reflective surface and light hitting the surface at an angle. It can also distract the eye from the subject of the photo. It can reduce the contrast of an image or cause unintended haziness. It creates an area in an image where the colors, texture, or surface cannot be captured because the light is too bright. Glare describes what happens when light reflects off a surface and into your eyes or into the camera lens. For this, you only need a small piece, as long as you keep it close to your lens. What is glare, and why is do photographers avoid it?īefore anyone tries to problem solve glare in photography, it is best to know what it is and why it causes issues in photos. You can use it for photographing mushrooms or flowers, for instance. It doesn’t weigh that much, and, in contrast to glass or a mirror, there is almost no risk of breaking. ![]() A small Perspex plate can also be used on location. I have used it for portraits and product photography. This can also hide imperfections and scratches in the Perspex. ![]() Again, the secret is to get a low angle relative to the Perspex plate. In contrast to glass or glass mirrors, the material is relatively lightweight and easy to take with you on location. Perspex plates are also wonderful mirrors. Always look careful how the subject is transformed, especially when those subjects are people. With this kind of reflection there is a risk of distortion, changing your subject into strange forms and shapes. If it has shiny wheel caps or chrome parts, it's a nice touch to get a reflection of the wedding couple. I always take a few picture of the wedding car. The only thing to do is to get close to the water. But it can be enough to get a great reflection. The amount of water was small and the depth less than a centimeter or so. I have captured such a reflection as an example in a small pool just after a rain shower. Even a small and shallow pool of water can be enough for a nice reflection. Using a Rather Insignificant Amount of WaterĪlthough a large water surface makes it easy to get a complete reflection of something like a landscape, you’re not limited to that. Some may be obvious, others may be easily overseen. I have seven places where you might find a suitable reflection. Such a reflective surface is not always available, but it might surprise you how often we oversee the other possibilities. There are many examples of this kind of reflection, especially in landscapes and portrait or wedding photos. ![]() It’s easy to find a reflection in a large body of water. I believe without, the image is too "heavy" at the bottom. For this star trail, the water and the reflection balance the image.
